KG 53 Mid-air collision 1943

Having just returned from interviewing a German bomber pilot from II/KG 53, he mentioned to me that between March & July 1943, they had been recalled to Gablingen to reform and during this time, there was a mid-air collision in cloud between 6 aircraft which resulted in the deaths of 18 crew. Would this have been 28 Jun 43 and if so does anyone have any more information?

Hi Chris,

i have it as a collision between 5 He 111 H-16 of II./KG 53 on 28. June 1943, over Langenneufnach, which is SW of Augsburg and roughly 10 km west of Lechfeld airbase. Involved were WNr.'s 160707 (Ltn. Germann, Siegfried), 160597 (N.N.), 160680 (Oblt. Novy, Karl), 8477 (Ogfr. Priesner, Alois) and 160584 (Oblt. Wolf, Karl).

Thanks gentlemen-saved me some time! Strange that I was quite close to this town last week. Awful to think that II/KG 53 had been withdrawn from Russia in March to reform after dreadful losses over Stalingrad only for this to happen!
