Which engine/aircraft took the B4/C3 Fuel Mixture??
 

I recently acquireda fuel hatch from a German Aircraft.

It is dark grey, and round, so for sure not Me109 or Fw190. Stencilled on the outside is B4/C3, indicting the type of fuel.

From what I recall, C3 did not appear until 1944. I know there are cases of late-war fighters with the B4/C3 mixture, however this is the first I have seen to indicate this (usually only one or the other were marked).

I was curious which engines could take this mixture...or by late-war, were all able to?

C3 fuel was used in DB601N engines in late 1940 and the BMW801.

Late war DB605D could take both types.

Some will give you better details, but the D-series had a number that could take either C3 or B4&MW50 mixes, to maintain high performance.

Initially in 1944, MW-50 boosted DB 605s (AM, ASM) would run on C-3. Butch noted some time ago that by late 1944, they were too capable of running at high boost (1,7ata), but with B-4.

Early-war British reports speak of 92 octane fuel found in the tanks of LW aircraft, appearantly it was some sort of mix of B-4 and C-3, altough most of the planes could happily do with B-4. The DB 601N, of course, only run on C-3.

As Ruy noted, the DB 605 DB / DB 605DC (same engine with different settings) with either B-4 (DB) or C-3, with a confusing array of power outputs. http://kurfurst.allaboutwarfare.com/...eets_DBDC.html

Additionally, there were early D series engines marked with 'O' (ie. DMO), probably standing for Oktane, which could switch the fuel type readily. BMW 801D series engine also used C-3, and appearantly He 111H bombers in late 1944 also used C-3.

Hi guys,


The problem is that I know 100% it is not from a 605DB or DC. This is the first hatch I have seen with both indicated. Not Me109 or 190 due to the size and shape, so I am trying to determine what aircraft it is from. 262 is also ruled out.

Noted that the 605D could run B4 1.8 AT. Model DB nd /or Model DC using C4 at 1.98 AT., different models are could be set "on the field" ?
