Ismailia Airfield

Hello guys,

Can anyone help with general information on Ismailia airfield, Egypt please?

Mainly late / end of war period, also the MU based there, photos, maps, airfield plans, or ideas etc. Is it still even in use at all?

It is the airfield itself I am interested in, not particularly the aircraft.

Many thanks,

Mervyn.

RAF Squadrons by wing Commander CG Jefford MBE RAF published by Airlife in 1988 has maps and details of the Sqns at Ismailia next to the Suez Canal.

The ISBN is 1 85310 053 6

Your library should be able to get a copy from the British Library if the local area doesn't hold a copy

NB - I cannot find any MU's that used the airfield

Hi Mervyn
Look at http://www.rafweb.org/Stations/Stations-I.htm#Ismailia where there some details of this station with a list of Units that were stationed there, with dates for many of them

Ismalia was still active with the Egyptian AF in the late 1950s and early 1960s. It was also home to No. 115 Air Transport Unit, RCAF during that time. 115 ATU operated Dakotas, Otters and Caribous in support of UN operations throughout the Middle East, and provided maintenance and transient servicing support to other UN units in the area.

The latest images on Goggle Earth show a couple of helicopters there, probably MILs, plus a gate guardian MiG-17.

The helicopters are parked about where a whole bunch of Spitfire spares might be buried.

I have a collection of photos showing many Mosquito a/c being burnt and scrapped there circa 1945.
