Greetings Everyone!

It is with some reluctance I´m starting a thread, as most of my previous entries seem to always start a controversy. While I´m not scared of conflicts in the real-life, thanks to my somewhat macho bearings, I have a bit of angst of this in the intellectual sphere.

Here goes: Konrad Bauer (II JG 300 5 staffel) flew a Fw190A-8 on 11 september 1944, when he was shot down (WNr 681 469) as far as I know the Gruppe was in the main equipped with the A-8/R2-R8 variant, but as I have come to understand, there was also a number of standard A-8´s, this type being better suited for fighting with the escorts, I assume that was the purpouse.

The loss list from JG 300 simply states Fw 190A-8.

Now to the question: was Bauer flying a regular A-8 or a "Sturmböcke"?

you seem to have read the JG 300 history - I think you've answered your own question in your second paragraph!

II.(Sturm)/JG300 aces with multiple P-51 vics (Bauer claimed three on that sortie alone didn't he?) would potentially have flown a standard A-8 (with erhoehte Notleistung). None of the photos of 'Kornjarck' I've seen show any Sturmbock additions..

W. Nr 681 469 were produced by Fiesler plant in Kassel, propably in August 1944. Most of Fiesler Fw 190s were a Fw 190A-8/R2 Sturmbock variant.

I'm always interested about claims/real losses rate. On 11 september (when Bauer claimed 3 P-51) all Luftwaffe units claimed 18 Mustangs, including two with no witness (According Tonny Woods files). VIII FC confirmed loss of 25 Mustangs, 13 of them in aeral combats (according Fighter Units and Pilots of the 8th USAAF by K. D. Miller). It's pretty good result, but few of P-51s can by downed by some of 60 Luftwaffe pilots killed on that day.

Hi!

Yes, I have seen Bauers A-8 ”Rote 3 Kornjark” Wnr 171 641, but this was not the machine he flew on that epic day of 11 sept-44, it was “Rote 21” Wnr 681 469. I have not seen any picture of this machine, and therefore I do not know if it is a “Sturmböcke” or not.

It would be quite a feat to accomplish the downing of three Mustangs flying this heap of bricks.
