Kampfgeschwader 77 Aug-Sep 1939
Hello,
is there any source or book about activities of Kampfgeschwader 77 during August-September 1939? Mainly Stab and I./KG 77. Are they known any losses during this timeframe? From which A/Fs operated during Polish Campaign? Thanks for help Michal |

This sort of question could be easily answered by consulting our book “Bomber Units of the Luftwaffe – A Reference Source”. Volume 2 deals with KG 77.
To answer your question, we quote from our book: For the period August and September 1939: Stab/KG 77 - During the summer it supervised the training activities of its Gruppen until mobilization on 26 August 1939 when it deployed to Grottkau /Silesia.reported having 9(9) Do 17 E at Grottkau /Silesia under 2. Fl.Div. /Lfl. 4 (1 September 1939); directed its Gruppen in south Poland initially against airfields then supported the drive of the Army into central Poland (September); ordered back to Prague-Kbely (c 21-22 September 1939). I./KG 77 – sent to Brieg after mobilization (42km SE of Breslau) (26 Aug 39). – reported having 37(34) Do 17E at Brieg under 2.Fl.-Div./Lfl. 4, struck Krakow-Rakowice a/f (1 September 39); bombed troop concentrations near Wielun (early September); bombed Warsaw(25 September); ordered to Praha-Kbely (c. 28? September 39); transferred to Werl (c.end of September 39). II./KG 77 - trained over the summer until mobilization on 26 August 1939 when it went to Grottkau /Silesia; reported having 37(32) Do 17 E at Grottkau /Silesia under 2. Fl.Div./Lfl. 4 (1 September 1939); apparently attacked Krosno and Moderovka (1 September); supported the south flank (September); bombed Warsaw (25 September 1939). III./KG 77 - moved to Olmütz, then spent the summer training. Upon mobilization on 26 August 1939 it relocated to Brieg in Silesia. Reported having 34(26) Do 17 E at Brieg (42 km south-east of Breslau /Silesia) under 2. Fl.Div. /Lfl. 4 (1 September 1939); after attacking airfields, the Gruppe supported the Army’s advance into south and central Poland (September); raided Warsaw (25 September); returned to Königgrätz (c end of September 1939). As you can see, the operational details are very general, mainly because that’s all we can find on this subject. Larry and I have scoured the published and archival records and what we present is basically all that there is. I hope this helps you out. Larry deZeng IV Doug Stankey |
