Lw bombing of Neutral Ireland 2/3 January 1941
Hi guys
Some time ago we were discussing the bombing of Eire locations/ships during 1941 etc. Do we know who was responsible for the bombing of Carlow on the night of 2/3 January 1941 when three members of the Shannon family were killed? Cheers Brian |
Re: Lw bombing of Neutral Ireland 2/3 January 1941
Hallo Brian,
I confess that, to date, I have done very little research on the subject of bombing incidents in neutral Ireland during WW2. However an excellent book was published last month titled GUARDING NEUTRAL IRELAND (The Coast Watching Service and Military Intelligence, 1939-1945) by Michael Kennedy, Four Courts Press. It mentions this incident, stating that the Irish Army Intelligence Branch (G2) identified bomb fragments at the site as being of German manufacture. A protest was officially made to the German Legation about this and other bombings that week. The Irish Authorities had no doubt these incidents were all caused by German aircraft. Hope this helps a little. Martin. |

Thanks Martin, I'll get the book.
