Looking for JG 3 bases, summer 1942.

Hi,

I am trying to place 'Frolow' and 'Tusow' on the map - elements of JG 3 has stationed at these places in the hot summer of 1942, but I cannot seem to find them on the map.

I presume they are German names for certain locations, and the names may have changed since the war.

Can anybody point me to where these places were/are?

Thanks in advance!

Dear Kurfürst

I hope these figures will help:

Based on the map published with Jagdfliegerverbände ...Vol 9/3 (approx.):

Frolow: 48 deg 38 min North; 42 deg 30 min East.
Tusow: 48 deg 40 min North; 43 deg 10 min East

According to Britannica Atlas, 1986 edition:

Frolow is more or less 10 Km North of the present Oblivskaja.

I have been unable to find a town close to the Tusow's position. It is WSW of Kalatsch na Donu ( the name in Britannica for Kalatsch).
There is a large modern reservoir in the region and perhaps the old Tusow is nowadays under the water.

A Russian member would probably be more helpful, but I hope that this could be useful for you.

Regards. Saludos

Thank you all for your answers, I wasnt sure. I suspected Russia, but since some search threw out locations in Poland, it was difficult to decide - also because somewhat similiar slavic language background, and it could well be some very ordinary and common name for a location.

Again, thank you for the confirmation that it is the Stalingrad area. This will prove very helpful for me.
