Unidentified Insignia on eBay Do17P
Hello,
Glad to have the Board back up. Can anyone ID this insignia on a Do17P that just auctioned on eBay? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=130240104253 Thanks, |
Re: Unidentified Insignia on eBay Do17P
Looks very similar to an emblem associated with 5./KG 3. "Luftwaffe Emblems 1939-45" by Ketley & Rolfe [Hikoki, 1998] says that 5./KG 3 used this between 1939-40 on Do17Z's...

Re: Unidentified Insignia on eBay Do17P
Peter,
Yes, I had noted the similarity of this insignia to 5./KG3, which, of course, flew the Do17Z early in the war. This, however, appears to be a Do17P and is probably from a reconnaissance unit. I strongly suspect that this is NOT from 5./KG3. Regards, |

Two further examples of the mysterious insignia from a recent crop posted on the forum... perhaps during the Balkans campaign, given the yellow cowlings...? In this photo, it would be difficult to determine the exact sub-type, M - bomber or P - reconnaissance.

Hi Larry,
in my old old photos I found one with inscription that this is an emblem of 2(F)/11. Regards Robert |
Re: Unidentified Insignia on eBay Do17P
Robert,
After evaluating the photos that you sent me, I agree that this is probably the insignia of 2.(F)/AufKlarGr 11, which used the code "6M." This insignia does not appear in the reference book by Ketley & Rolfe, but there are other examples of Do17Ps that force-landed with this insignia. Does anyone else have any photos of aircraft from this unit during the 1939-40 period, particularly FL or crashes. I note two examples in Gillet's books on the FC. Thanx, |
Re: Unidentified Insignia on eBay Do17P
Gentleman,
this bird with a camera was the emblem of 2.(F)/11 during the French, Balkan and Russian campaign well into 1942. |
