411.Squadron the 7.May 1944
 

Good evening!

On the above date the flying Canadian flight leader was credited with two victories in France, both Fw 190.
Is his name known and the codes on his Spitfire too.
Can i find a picture of him anywhere! I tried the internet, but could not find anything. I´d like to build a model of his plane!

I'm not sure if you are referring to the Squadron CO on that date. He was S/L N.R. Fowlow, DFC who would be shot down and killed on 19 May 1944.

I only have my informations from the book on JG 26 by Caldwell, where it states"....The Canadian flight leader shot down two Fw 190s..."

I do not know more unfortunately

This could mean just the leader of the flight involved. By mid 1944 RCAF fighter squadrons were operated in various sizes, from squadron strength down to units of 4. The flight leader would just be the senior pilot in the group, and could have been any of the more experienced pilots.

Maybe someone on the Forum has access to the 411 Squadron ORB? This might have the details you need.

It was F/Lt R.W. Orr in Spitfire 9b MJ229 time was 7:15 to 10:02 .

Apparently both his victims were sporting fleur-de-lis emblems, although they are identified as two pilots of 3 staffel, JG26.

Sorry to ask furthermore, but is the letters on Orr´s aeroplane known and is it possible to find a picture of him?

What is a fleur-de-lis emblem?

The fluer-de-lis is a French symbol, based on a lily flower. The Canadians writing the 411 Squadron diary would recognize this symbol from the Quebec flag. It is possible that it was some other stylized flower, that the Canadians took for a fleur-de-lis.

Could it be that in the heat of battle, they have believed, that the french flower in fact was the "S" = Schlageter, which was carried by A/C´s from JG 26.
Again sorry for all these questions.
