449th FS

Frank Olynyk mentioned in his book Stars and Bars the fact that the 449th Fighter Squadron was flying in the 23rd Fighter Group. Could you please do me a favour and provide me the exact date (from - till) was assigned to the 23rd FG. And also that was in the 10th or the 14th USAAF?

Re: 449th FS

The 449th was part of the 51st Fighter Group but was attached to the 23rd Fighter Group from 26 August to October 1943. Source is "World War II Combat Squadrons of the United States Air Forse" edited by Maurer Maurer.

Re: 449th FS

The 449th was formed in the Middle East as "the P-38 Special Project" made up of extra P-38s and pilots and not assigned to any Fighter Group. It was given the unit number 449th FS and transferred to China with the first several aircraft and pilots arriving late in the month of July 1943. It was in combat soon thereafter attached for operations but not formally assigned to the 23rd FG. Formal assignment to a fighter group came later.
