Vickers Wellington of No 205 Group RAF
Wich Mk of the Vickers Wellington did the No 205 Group of the RAF (operated with the 15 USAAF) had in use during June to fall 1944? I am also interested in how these aircraft were painted. Is it possible that they were whole black?
Regards and thanks for your help! Kurtl |

Kurtl,
You may be interested to see this website: http://www.perth.igs.net/~long/history.htm It's about No 150 Squadron when it flew Wellingtons out of Italy. Type was Wellington Mk. X. Regards, Leendert |
Re: Vickers Wellington of No 205 Group RAF
Kurtl - Wellington Mark X. Usually night (black), middlestone & dark earth. Nose turrets were often sealed with a strip of doped fabric. Some squadrons had no code letters e.g. 70 but only the aircraft letter in dull red. My late father was a pilot on 70 from late 1943 to mid 1944 & completed a tour of 38 sorties.
Hope this helps. Bill |
Re: Vickers Wellington of No 205 Group RAF
I suspect Dark Green and Dark Earth rather than Middle Stone, as the Desert Scheme was not widely used after the end of the North African campaign. Older aircraft still in this scheme would, I'd have thought, been Mk.IIIs rather than Mk.Xs, as used in Italy.
However, 205 Group is not a subject that has been widely covered. |
