Trying to ID this emblem on Bf110C of ZG1? during 1940.
 

Hello,

Does anyone know what this insignia or emblem is on the fuselage of this Bf110C? This possibly came from 2./ZG1, although this is speculative. This may be a personal emblem, but I haven't a clue of what it is. Anyone recognize it or have other photos depicting this?

It's a top hat. Probably carried forward by a Legion Condor pilot.

Hello Larry, how do you know it is 1940? Looks like very early C-1 to me (on the engine cowling there are no cooling slots in front of exhausts), could well be 1939, crosses are not visible, so do not know if early narrow or later style.

Pavel actually I don't know that this is 1940. You're right, this could be a 1939-era photo although, IRC 2./ZG1 flew the Bf110B during the Polish Campaign, and did not re-equip with the Bf110C until about October. It could be after then, however. I note that there is no sign of the extra-large underwing crosses instituted in mid-October, 1939.

So, would 2./ZG1 still have been using early-version Bf110C-1s into 1940? Perhaps John Vasco has an opinion on that?

Does anyone know of any other photos of this bird, perhaps showing the emblem more clearly?
