Who shot down Lt. Canner July 14, 1944

Hi All,

On July 14, 1944 Lt. Stanley Canner, my father, was flying a Mustang and was shot down over occupied France at 1917h. There are two German claims for that time, Ihlefeld (south of Caen) and Grislawski (Falaise area.) Since the Falaise area is south of Caen, I am unsure which one shot him down.

Does anyone have or know where I might locate mission reports from Ihlefeld's and /or Grislawski's groups for that day.

Thank you,
Neil

Neil,
Try Christer Bergstrom since he wrote the book Graf & Grislawski A Pair of Aces. He also knew Grislawski. He only mentioned it was a 9th Air Force Mustang in his book.

A third claim for a Mustang this day:

Uffz. Jakob Vogel, 8./JG1,
P-51, 19.17 hours (no location mentioned)

Nokose,

Thank you for the reply. I have the book Graf and Grislawski. Unfortunately it has no description about Grislawski's mission on July14th, just the details that it was in the Falaise area and the Mustang was from the 9th AF, which my father belonged.

Do you know how I can contact Christer Bergstrom.

Was he flying with 363rd FG or maybe a recon unit? He definitely wasn't flying with the 354FG as they had no losses on the 14th July and the 8th AF lost a P-38 to flak.

Hi Drgondog,

My father was with the 12th TRS of the 67 TRG of the 9th AF. On July 14, 1944 the 12th TRS was attached to the 10th PRG. Lt. Canner and Capt. Rusten were returning from a just completed recce southwest of Paris, only about 20 minutes from their base when they were attacked.

It's very strange, I think, that there are three Mustang claims for that day and only one MACR for a Mustang, Lt. Canner's, MACR #6662.

Even more strange is that all three Mustang claims are for the exact same time, 1917h.

Maybe some of you can give some feedback on that fact.

My real desire is to find the Mission Summary reports so if anyone has access or knows wher I might find them, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks,

Neil
