Guys

Aufkl Gr 10 I believe...
http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?...m=260283718683

But what type of Ju 88? Aufklärung means perhaps a D model, but they also operated A models so I am quite uncertain. Anyone who knows and can point at what clenches the ID?

Cheers
Stig

Re: Photos 9-9

Hello Stig;

I am schoked, not recognising a standard Ju 88 D-1 when you see one?

These notes below are just an sample of how to recognise! (Just written here from memory - Not complete listings - Any comments will not be listened or responded too :)

What makes it an A-1F, A-5F, D-2, D-1, D-5 model? Mostly the absence of Dive-Brakes, Camera ports on underside, heater inlet scoop on top of fuselage etc. Mudguard Fences on underside beside camera windows (on bomb-bay). FuG 10 trailing-wire antenna mast moved to left side bottom an angled outwards (to be ´out of sight´ of cameras = Standard on all Ju 88 from late 1939, except the Torpedo Bombers, then straight down, f.e. the A-4 LT / A-17).

Then - A-1F (VDM metal props, short-wings, Jumo 211 B engines) Camera ports for the ´Rheinbild´ Rb 30 Cameras, Single ring (one+2gun upper-rear canopy), - A-5F (VDM metal props, long-wings on all models onwards, Jumo 211 G) Single ring rear gun etc, D-2 upgraded to Beetle-Eyed ´twin´ two-gun installation 1941 (similar as A-5 F), - D-1 (VS 11 Wood props, Jumo 211 J engines), - D-5 (VDM metal props, Jumo 211 J engines) etc. Many had the Gondola removed for more speed Longer distance Recce and had reduced crew of only three.

D-3, 4, 6, C-7 etc. were specials (often difficult to recognise).

hope you have some success using this as ´handbook´

cheers
ed

Re: Photos 9-9

Thanks Ed

Truth is I am pretty glad I can still shock somebody out there...:D Actually thought those days were kind of over....:)

Can't say I am surprised you stepped in and perhaps my dilemma is that there really is no good and complete book about the Ju 88 available (yet, hint hint...) In those three books I have there is not even a three view drawing of the D model available. The drawings in Sqadron Signal No 16 is not really that good and not much difference is visible and the photo I commented on the internet, well, I have seen better...

But lets skip the defences and admit that I am notoriously lousy identifying sub-types, even on good photos, and I have asked myself that question many times why that is so. Perhaps the simple answer is that I simply don't have the gift...

I will see if I can do the same matching as you have done with your pointers, ED. Almost forgot to say thanks!!

Anyway Ed. what about it? When will you go public???

Cheers
Stig

Re: Photos 9-9

Guys

Just had an answer from Lennart Andersson with regard to the "mystery DC-3's" seen here
http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?...m=270273617085

They ARE Russian and follow the rules stipulated from 1939. Photos are most probably taken during the winter 1939-40 and post Jan 1940.
In fact on page 189 in his History of Chinese aviation to 1949 we can read more about those DC-3/C-47 used by Hamiata (Chinese-Soviet Aviation Company). Some of the markings used are identical.

Lennart also says he has high hopes that Red Stars 6, his book about Aeroflot, will finally be published by the Finish publisher.

Hei Stig,

Public? Nothing firm yet, many, many, years probably. Just so depends on who is or who´s not to assisting - good friends are helping already - besides so many other things, family, other priorities, earning bred and butter, spare time etc. etc. But things are generally going well - but slower at times. Basically work IS progressing ...

Thanks for asking.

Hi Stig

I don't suppose you have any other Ju 88 pictures from this unit? I'd be very grateful to get copies.

Cheers

Cheers Ed :)

Just remember we ain't getting any younger....

Sorry Chris

I am no photo collector myself, I am just one who likes Ed's lists.

Cheers
Stig

PS. If anyone thinks it's confusing with both Ed West and North, just remember we don't have yet any Ed East and South, so I am still able to seperate them even when they are in the same post:D
