Help with search for information on RAF aircrew
A neighbour of mine when I was a child was RAF aircrew in WWII, flying Beaufighters (and Mosquitos?) in Burma.
I have his name, George Thompson, and the information above, but that is all. Does anyone know how I can go about finding more information about him? I suspect he may well have died by now. He retired to North Yorkshire some time ago, and I moved away also, and it is 20 years and more since we were last in contact. Any help would be gratefully received. Thanks, Nacluv |
Re: Help with search for information on RAF aircrew
Nacluv,
Found a reference to (a) W/O Thompson as a pilot with No. 211 Squadron that flew Beaufighters and the Mosquito in SE Asia here: http://users.cyberone.com.au/clardo/...and_burma.html It appears he got injured on 16 Feb 1944. Service No R1076969. Also found the name F/Sgt George Thompson on a WW II roll for greater Grimsby. He was from there? Regards, Leendert |
Re: Help with search for information on RAF aircrew
Hi Leendert.
Thanks for the response. I am struggling for information because I know so few details. I knew George because I lived next door to him. He had long since retired from the RAF. He lived in Sheffield, which is not very far from Grimsby. His wife was called Millie (Mildred) and they never had any children. He once showed me a portrait photograph of him in his RAF uniform. He had some model aircraft of the types he flew (and flew against) of which he was very proud of: a Beaufighter, a Mosquito, a Japanese Betty and a Dinah. I have nothing else about him, but would love to know more. The problem I have is that I am not a relative, and therefore cannot search through official records because I cannot claim next of kin. As they never had children, I do not know who could possibly claim that now. Any help to narrow down the search is gratefully received. How many squadrons flew both Beaufighters and Mosquitos in Burma? Best regards, Nacluv |
Re: Help with search for information on RAF aircrew
Hi
The Service No quoted by Leendert has an R in front of it. This normally indicates a Canadian non-commissioned airman. If it is correct I believe the Canadians are more open about releasing personnel records this long after the war and an approach to them might bring results that would not be available to a non relative in UK.To be in the RCAF need not require Canadian citizenship and RCAF pesonnel were spread throughout RAF Sqns.
