Bf110s attacked Rennes 19 June 1940

Hi guys

Peter Cornwell records that on 19 June 1940, Bf110s attacked Rennes airfield after it had been occupied, damaging three aircraft of 1(H)/31 and killing Hptm Friedrich.

Which Bf110 unit was involved?

Who was Hptm Friedrich? The CO? What was his first name?

Cheers
Brian

Not so Brian, Hptmn Hellmuth Friedrich who was the Staffelkapitän of 2.(H)/31 (Pz) was only wounded in the attack. He was later air-lifted by Junkers Ju52 along with four others: Gefr Karl Braunschmidt, Flgrn Boleslaus Ogorek, Friedrich Winkelmann, and Johannes Sparwel. A fifth wounded man, Obergefr Emil Eder, was treated in a field hospital in Rennes.

We have searched our files and while we have several H. Friedrich's, none of them appear to be the fellow in question. We have one flak guy, two LN guys and a staff man. That's all.

Is there anyone out there who can shine some light on this?

Hi Doug

My mistake - he was not killed! Badly wounded.

Apologies

Brian,

The extent of wounds is not known to me though the fact that he was air-lifted out tends to suggest that they were serious. No PM since your advice that you had got a copy of BoFrT&N to which I replied.

Doug,

All I can offer is: Hptmn Hellmuth Friedrich (58225/1) of 2.(H)/31 (Pz) born 31.5.1897 in Frankens i./Schl.

Hope this helps.
