SG-116 Zellendusche Anti Bomber Armament
 

My interest in this little known armament system was brought about by a reference to a Fw-190 picture in a prior thread.

After turning to my trusty FW-190 quick guide "The FW-190" by Heinz Nowarra" (1964), I relearnt that the SG-116 armament system was either: (1) Four MK-103 in a rhomboid form in the fuselage (2) six Mk-103 in a double triangular form or (3) three Mk-103 in line with an angle of spread of 2 degrees. This last form was installed in 40 Fw-190F-8s of Jdgr-10in Parchim.

This interesting set up was translated as the airborne douche! Does anyone know whether system this was ever sucesful?

"Flugzeugbewaffnung" by Hanfried Schliephake says on page 187 that about 40 Fw 190 F-8s were equipped with sets of 3 SG 116s and were sent about the middle of 1944 to Erprobungskommando 25, and later JG 10 (sic), for service evaluation. No further comments on this.

Well, it's not as clever as you might think, because the fighter would need to fly under the target bomber at a distance of 50 - 100m. That would mean that the fighter would need to fly through an entire box of bombers to reach his target, which would be close to suicidal.

A more efficient weapon was the R4M rocket which could be launched at a distance of 600 - 800m (as specified in a Mar 45 report by JGr 10) and was set to cover a particular pattern of sky that was supposed to cover the shape of the bomber. In fact, that rocket, in an updated form, is still in use today. In the 60s it was called the Mickey Mouse. I'm not sure what it's called today.
