Otto Stammberger
 

Hi guys

I am wondering if any one would have the loss information for the aircraft that Oberleutnant Otto Stammberger (7 victories) was flying when he was wounded on 31 December 1943 by B-17 four-engined bombers and on 24 January 1944 in a take-off accident with both occurring while he was serving with 2./JGr West. I believe that both aircraft were Fw 190 A-3 fighters but any additional information would be very helpful.

We don’t have anything pertaining to his loss report. I checked the Tony Wood claims and losses compilation and came up empty. From our Officer’s Careers database we have the following on this guy:

09.40 trained with JFS 5.
28.02.41 trf to Erg.St./JG 26.
(n.d) first posting was 9./JG 26.
01.02.43 promo to Oblt.
26.02.43 Oblt., appt Staka 4./JG 26 (to 13.05.43 WIA).
13.05.43 WIA severely after being shot down by Spitfires near St. Omer. Out of operations for over 5 months.
24.01.44 WIA in an accident at Bergerac, and permanently withdrawn from combat duty.
(n.d.) spent remainder of war on staff duties with JG 26.
(n.d) trf to 2./JGr.West.
01.01.45 promo to Hptm.
(n.d.) Post war, he became the manager of a large department store.

Many thanks for your post as any additional information is more than welcomed. I do know that on 13 May 1943 he was shot down in Fw 190 A-4 "White 9" (W.Nr. 0140 739) by Spitfire fighters of 331 (Norwegian) Sqn or 332 (Norwegian) Sqn, RAF. Concerning his incidents with JGr West, he was shot down by four-engined bombers on 31 December 1943 and injured when his parachute was damaged and he suffered a hard landing. On 24 January 1944 he took off to intercept four-engined bombers but his engine had not warmed up sufficiently and unable to gain altitude he struck the roof of a house and was again injured in the ensuing crash. I recall reading somewhere that the four-engined bombers were actually He 177 bombers... I hope that all is well with you and thank you for your information.

Doug, don't forget that "Stotto" was also a post-war Minister of Defense of the Bundesrepublik.
