Identity of this Me Bf109

1 Attachment(s)
Hello everyone,

Local newspaper published this photo, believed to be a Me 109 shot down in the Gembloux (Belgium) Area, in 1940. I have attached the file to this post. due to the large size of the picture I had to compress it. if you need the "full" version, please e-mail me at legrosherve @ swing dot be (I've encrypted my e-mail for spammers).Attachment 2755

The questions are :
  • Would it be possible to identify the plane? Geschwader (?)/Gruppe (2?)/Staffel (?) with the remains of the markings...
  • Does anyone already seen this picture and could may be identify the exact area where it was taken? or do someone have the records of the fallen german aicrafts in order to try to locate the crash site?
Many thanks for your help,

Kind Regards

Hervé

Hi,

it was once at E-Bay in photo grouping from 5./JG3 but there is no matching loss during May-June Campaign for it. I have another photo of this Bf109E captioned as Mazy S of Gembloux.

Hi robert,

May I kindly ask you if I can have a scan of your photo mentionning that it's in Mazy?

May I ask you where did you look to have the downed german aircraft, as you say not in May June?

Manythanks for your help

Hello Robert and Hervé,

Another picture of this Bf 109 was published in the book written by my good friend Pierre Watteeuw "Les pertes de la chasse allemande de jour en Belgique 1940-1945 TomeI". Pierre - living in that very area - captionned this 109 wrongly at "le Péka" (or "le Péca") near Mazy. But he locates it now at about 600m N-E of Bothey (still in that area, S-O of Gembloux). Unfortunately Pierre wasn't able to find neither the day of the loss nor the identity of the aircraft. It would be on the 13th or 14th May 1940 (but with no accurancy). This could be also a material loss as this aircraft has no entry in verlustmeldung.
By the way what is your interest in that topic?

I would be interested by a copy of your picture to send it to Pierre

Best regards

Hi,

@ClinA-78 this is this photo, which I mentioned.
@legrosherve I don`t want to say that this loss didn`t occur in May-June 1940 I just want to say that I didn`t find a match in loss lists.

Regards

Robert

Re: Identity of this Me Bf109

Hi,

As I am from gembloux and I do some military ressearch in the area, I was quite surprised that this picture was published in the local newspapaer and I tried to help the guy to get some info.

I don't know who post the picture as the contact is the secretar of the Local History Bulletin.

I will transmit to him those infos.

If some other pictures are available, I would be pleased to see them.

Hervé
