MACR 10226- 2nd Lt Davis P-38

Is the crash site at Stotzheim south of Euskirchen or Schweinheim close to Bonn?

STATEMENT of 2nd Lt Wayne E. Phillips 5 Nov 1944
At approx. 1430 on 3 Nov 1944 Lt. Davis and I were circling at 9000 feet above the target area 1 mile southwest of Stotzheim, Germany (grid coord. F-337258). I was flying position blue two, Lt Davis was blue flight leader; we were on a dive-bombing mission. Acting as top cover we were
Flying above the overcast while the other two flights made their bomb run. Suddenly at this time a burst of heavy flak exploded directly beneath Lt Davis plane and it immediately caught fire. His plane pulled up, turned over on its back and went into a dive in the overcast. I called Lt Davis on the radio and told him to bail out, but there was no acknowledgement. I never saw his plane again after it went down through the overcast below me, and I observed no parachute in this vicinity.

Any Info welcome

Dear Jörg,

Try the following link which is the coordinate F337258

Let me know if you can't see the map related to this link.

I would be very pleased to hear any information about Ray Davis to communicate them to his close buddy Lt Owen Fincher who is now 88 years old.

@ Jörg & olliball

Good evening !

This 3rd November 1944 was a tricky day in losses of 367th and 370th FG P-38's.
Comparing the facts of the losses and the losing times in connection with the German LGK-reports, the following time-table is on my opinion the most realistic one:

- at 13:25 hrs, P-38, AAF-s/n 42-67463, 370th FG, 402nd FS was hit by Flak and came down somewhere west of Cologne, Germany. The pilot, 1st Lt. Earle W. Bauer became POW. This event is NOT reported in an available German LGK-report

- at appx. the same time, P-38, AAF-s/n 44-23175, 370th FG, 402nd FS was also hit by Flak and came down near Myhl, about 10 km WNW of Erkelenz, Germany. The pilot, Lt. Henry E. Sanders, went down behind the lines and survived to become POW. This event is well documented in LGK-report # J 2380.

- at about 14:45 hrs, a P-38 came down at Schweinheim near Loch. according to the same LGK-report # J 2380.

What could be done else now ????. Does anyone has access to the original LGK-report # J 2380 ?.

All the best !

Dear Horst and Jörg,

Unfortunately I have not any German documentation...

According to Lt Adams' statement, Ray Davis was shot down around 14h33 while acting as top cover for yellow and red flight making their bomb run.

You can find this MACR statement on footnote web site.

Bye,
Olliball
