Nightfighter loss by collision 1 Sep 1943
Can anyone tell me about a nightfighter loss on 1 Sept 1943 by collision with an RCAF Halifax JD270? The Halifax crashed in the Wernigerode Forest, 3 kms south west of Wernigerode near the town of Hasserode. I am assuming the fighter also crashed.
I have information on the bomber. It is the nightfighter I am looking for, which apparently was a single-engine a/c. |

Re: Nightfighter loss by collision 1 Sep 1943
In the always helpful new book of Theo Boiten "The Nachtjagd War Diaries" I found for this night:
Hptm. Wilhelm Telge. St.Kpt. of the 5th Staffel, dispatched two Stirlings for his 13th and 14th Abschüsse. His Bf110 G4 G9+AN rammed the second Stirling, causing the right wing of the fighter to shear. Oblt. Heinz Freymann, Telge's BF, managed to bale out at the last moment but Telge was killed when his Messerschmitt smashed into the ground. His 14th Abschuss, which was reported to have crashed at the village entry of Tuetschendorf with full bomb load , has not been identified, nor was subsequently listed by OKL as an anerkannter Abschuss (confirmed kill). Oblt Freymann was back in action again on 5-6 Sept, scoring an Abschussbeteiligung in the crew of Lt. Henseler. Peter Spoden |
