SM92

Hi guys

is it correct that the prototype SM92 was attacked and damaged by a MC205 in March 1944, the pilot having mistaken it for a Bf110?

Any information would be appreciated.

Cheers
Brian

Re: SM92

The fact is confirmed, only that the mistaken identity was that of a P-38 Lightning, not of a Bf 110, because that would have been quite strange as the C.205 belonged to the ANR (RSI air force) and was a German's ally...

Hope this helps

Thanks Ferdinando

Would you happen to know the identities of the SM92 crew and the MC205 pilot and his unit? Also, the date and circumstances.

Cheers

Re: SM92

The accident took place on 17 march 1944.

The SM.92 was flown (as usual) by the test pilot Magg. Aldo Moggi, on that flight accompanied by the engineer Carlo Balzarini.

The identity of the ANR fighter pilot instead remains to date unknown, as well as his unit. It could have been a C.205 of Squadriglia "Montefusco" or one eventually used by Macchi to protect his airfields at Venegono and Lonate Pozzolo. (1° Gruppo Caccia probably should be not counted as based at that time at Udine-Campoformido, several hundred kilometers from Vergiate.)

Hope this helps.

According to "Centauri su Torino" by G. Garello, pag. 47, the SM.92 was attacked by m.llo Ennio Tarantola of the Squadriglia Montefusco.

Re: SM92

Thanks Ferdinando and Gianandrea

That wraps that up nicely. One moment I hadn't even heard of the aeroplane - and within a day or so have its brief history for inclusion in my friendly fire series.

Cheers
