I.Erganzungsgruppe/SG2

Hi,

Other than several losses I have noted for this unit and that they were under the control of Luftflotte 10, does anyone have any information about this unit; location, personalities, etc?

I've tried all the usual places (on- and off-line) and can't find a thing,

Cheers,
Chris

The reason you can’t find anything about this unit is because SG 2 had no such Gruppe. However, I am sure what you are referring to is the Erg.Schl.Gr. (Unit Code: 4M+). Formed toward the end of March 1943 at Dęblin-Irena by renaming the Ergänzungszerstörergruppe and consisted of a Gruppenstab, 1. Staffel with Messerschmitt Bf 109s and Focke-Wulf Fw 190s (ex-3./Erg.Zerst.Gr.), 2. Staffel with Henschel Hs 123s and Hs 129s (ex-2./Erg.Zerst.Gr.) and 3. Staffel with Messerschmitt Bf 110s (ex-1./Erg.Zerst.Gr.). It operated in Poland from March 1943 until November 1943). On 15 November 1943 it was renamed I./S.G. 152. Its successive commanders were: Hptm. Heinz Frank, Major Alfred Druschel , Major Georg Dörffel .

A much more detailed description shall appear in our new book “Ground Attack Units of the Luftwaffe, A Reference Source” (title not yet set) which is likely to be released sometime this summer.

Doug,

Many will look forward to your book on Schlacht units. I am curious whether or not there will be a comprehensive claims list. To date info on Schlachtflieger Abchüsse is spotty at best.

Regards,

Tom

There will be no claims list, comprehensive or otherwise. There will be some incidental references to losses, if notable.

Re: I.Erganzungsgruppe/SG2

Can you definitively state this Gruppe never existed?

The losses I have noted date from February '45 (an Fw 190A-6, 9x Bf 109G-6s and 2x Bf 109G-14s), which does not fit with the Erg.Schl.Gr you mention above, as this was renamed some 18 months before.

They could be mis-recorded or a transcription error, but with 12 separate losses recorded, I'd be doubtful - although researching the SGs has taught me to never say never!

At the very least, this requires some further investigation, to prove or disprove either way,

Just my thoughts, thanks for yours,

Chris

We can state definitively that there never was a "I.(Erg)/SG 2 (or similar). We have mini-histories for all the various sub-units, so if there had been any trace evidence found, we would have at least mention such a sub-unit. Whereas some StGs had had attached Erg. sub units, by 1943, these functions had been subsumed by dedicated Erg. Stuka and Erg Schlacht units. By the time SG units were formed in October 1943, there were no more attached Erg. units.
