Me109/Fw190 Loss January 5th 1945

Gents,

On.........

5th January 1945 : Ludwigshafen (Marshalling Yards)

This attack carried out by RAf Bomber Command was rather scattered due to a weak G-H tracking pulse and clear skies over the target area. The weak pulse resulted in scattered bombing and the clear sky gave the German Flak gunners a visual target. Very accurate predicted flak broke up the formation. A fair concentration of bombs fell in the target area. The last squadron to bomb, No.90 were attacked by a number of FW190’s & Me109's who managed to shot down a squadron Lancaster. In return the squadron gunners shot down a FW190. Fighter escort gave splendid support under difficult conditions.

Question, can anyone please I.D these German unit's and was there any day fighter losses on this day credited to RAF Bomber Command gunners or their escort.

TIA

Smudger:)

Hello Smudger,

I cannot identify the German unit, but Mustang pilots of 122 Sqn that took part on escort of bombers to Ludwigshafen claimed 2-0-0 Bf 109s during this mission. Source: John Foreman´s Fighter Command War Diaries, Volume 5.

Hope this helps a little,

Ota
