Bf109 crash-landed Antikythera (Greek island) May 1941

Hi guys

One for our Greek friends (and others)

Is there any evidence that a Bf109 (and also a Hurricane) crash-landed on the same beach on the island of Antikythera in May 1941?

If so, further details would be appreciated.

Cheers
Brian

Hello Brian,
I suppose that you are talking about a foto showing one Bf-109 ( "black 1" of Ofw. Werner Petermann , 5./JG 77 ) which crashed landed on a beach near Maleme. In the same foto , in the backround , there also a Hurricane with a great hole on the fuselage and the rudder.
Hope this helps.

Hi Tasos

Thanks for the response.

Actually, I am referring to the Luftwaffe ace Ltn Adolf Dickfeld of II/JG77 who implies in his book Footsteps of the Hunter that he force-landed on a beach on Antikythera after being hit by a Hurricane in May 1941. He states that a Hurricane he had shot down also force-landed on the same beach.

Having just re-read the passage, I now realise that the Hurricane and Bf109 apparently came down on the tip of southern Greece, probably near Argos

Any ideas?

Cheers
Brian

Re: Bf109 crash-landed Antikythera (Greek island) May 1941

Dear Brian,
Dickfeld was a pilot of III./JG 52. His unit was based at Molaoi during 25/5/41 - 10/6/41 , in this period III./JG 52 lost 6 airplanes , 5 of them crash landed at Molaoi and one at Malemes.
By the way in this book are there any references or fotos from his brief stay at Molaoi?

The loss records i mentioned came from Jochen Prien's book "Jagdfliegerbande der Deutschen Luftwaffe , teile 5". Until now i was certain that these were the losses. From which source have you find yours Byron?

Hallo Byron

A couple of points. First you list for some reason WNr 3449 twice.
Most of what you have is also listed by Jochen Prien in his Jagdfliegerverbände Vol 5, except the two losses from 25.5.1941 and a single loss on 30.5.1941 (WNr 3723)
Is it possible for you to list the exact source for that information?

Also Uffz Werner Rode bellylanded WNr 6326

Cheers
Stig

i accidentally pasted the WNr 3449 line twice, no other reason for that repetition.

the source of this information, if I remember well,
is the list of losses of Quartiermeister 6.
