If you google the serial number and P-51 you will find:
http://www.aviationarchaeology.com/s...y/Jul1944O.htm

440711 P-51B15 43-24844 354FS 355FG 122 8 BOEF 5 Tremberth, Floyd W ENG Flimwell

You can order from that site OR contact the AFHSO at the following website:
http://www.airforcehistory.hq.af.mil/

They will tell you the contents or send you on a copy of the crash report.

Pilot name listed above is:
Floyd W Tremberth

Sadly he seems to have passed away:

he is on a family tree on Ancestry.com so you coudl perhaps contact a family member.

His is a fairly unusual name but there are very few records other than those above for him.

Can't get an officers serial numebr for him but that will be on the crash report. If you do get it can you post some details up here.

Cheers

Dennis

Trevor, yes that makes sense. I have a Police report for the incident but I think you will find that the actual site of the crash is now underneath the Bewlbridge Reservoir.

Many thanks to you both.

The aircraft was recovered just before Bewlbridge Reservoir was flooded but has always been a mystery aircraft. It has recently been sugested that it may be this aircraft.

Yes, it certainly is this aircraft. No doubt about it.

Trembarth was a 354FS pilot slow timing a new engine in the 358FS Mustang YF-O Morphine Sue (McNally's ship).

He became disoriented in weather and spun out, bailing out at last moment. Trembarth later taken off flight ops and transferred to 65th FW as an aircraft controller.
