Luftwaffe loss 12/13 June 1943
I am researching into a claim of a Bf109 shot down by the crew of Lancaster ED840 on a raid to Bochum on 12/13 June 1943. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks

Interesting. There is a fairly full account in the 156 PF Squadron ORB for the 12/13th June 1943
"At 0157hrs, 16000ft an Me 109 was sighted away to s/b: evasive action was taken and E/A was again seen to port and back to s/b about the same height, closing in to about 800yds. E/A lost height and came around to port beam and closed in to about 500 yards. M/U gunner gave a 2 second burst and bullets were seen to strike E/a. M/U gunner gave a further 3 second burst when A/C was 350 yards away. E/A was seen to burst into flames and fall in sections. 5 seconds later, verry cartridges were seen to explode. The action was seen and confirmed by all members of the crew." The crew were lost on their next mission to Cologne. |

Hi.
Several losses for these dates... the raid was to Bochum, but any idea approx where this incident should have taken place? Have 26 lost or damaged Bf 109s on these dates to different reasons and various degree of damage, about 7 or so would loosely fit the description. Regards, Andreas B |
Re: Luftwaffe loss 12/13 June 1943
No single engined nightfighting units were up that night. They had their debut on the night 3-4. july 1943. So the claim for a Bf 109 can be dismissed. It must be a Bf 110, Ju 88 or Do 217.
Only one in my record could possible be related to this incident, II/NJG 1 landed at St. Trond beeing 15% damaged due to enemy fire. Bf 110 G-4. Crew unhurt. Junker |
