56th FG 28 september 1944
Hello to all
I am looking for the crash place of the 2nd Lt Pitts Walter H. (KIA)O-770393 56th FG 63rd FS 28 September 1944 , the serial of the A/C was probably #42-28822 Many thanks in advance Phil |
Re: 56th FG 28 september 1944
Pitts KIA after crashing into ground or trees while strafing southwest of Koblenz

Re: 56th FG 28 september 1944
I have the same information but the 28 September the area was not yet in allied hands and there is no MACR for that loss!! so he probably went down much more west than Koblenz ,

@ Flupke & drgondog !
You are right. 2nd Lt. Pitts came down in allied territory in Luxembourg. His crash-location is Hupperdingen, local district "Knupp", according to the most serious sources from there. Those circumstances may explain, why no MACR was compiled. Lt. Col. Schilling was right in his aereal positioning, giving an appx. position as Speicher and Herforst. The distance from Lt. Col. suspected position to 2nd Lt. Pitts crash-location is only about 47 km WNW. 2nd Lt. Pitts remains are now resting at Henry-Chapelle Permanent Cemetary in Belgium. Hope, this helps. Horst Weber |
Re: 56th FG 28 september 1944
As usual , Many thanks Horst , very interesting information !!
However I have a doubt At Hupperdingen it was maybe the 1st Lt Nangle Mc Elroy (KIA)O-670960 362nd FG 377th FS E4-D 42-28446 loss during a training flight Regards Phil |

Yes, it is doubtful. But much happened in allied territory and is not reported in MACR's. In the cases 1st Lt. Nangle McElroy and 2nd Lt Walter Pitts an individual research via IDPF would certainly clear all questions. Best wishes ! Horst Weber |
Re: 56th FG 28 september 1944
You’re right the IDPF should solve the problem.
1st Lt Nagle was in training flight from Prosne , I think that Hupperdingen is really far from there and also risky for a training (frontline) , however Pitt was coming probably already damaged from the area SEof Bitburg and it’s much more probable that he tried to reach allied lines with a course NE . Hupperdingen seems to be the right place I will contact John Derneden to see if he had more information on this. Many thanks Horst Regards Phil |
Re: 56th FG 28 september 1944
Well gentlemen !!
After a very interesting conversation with my good friend John Derneden , it’s definitively sure it’s well Hupperdingen for the crash site of Lt Pitts , Lt Nangle crashed NE of Prosnes . Many thanks for your help Regards Phil |
