Peter Bäthge

Hi all,

I'm searching teh details of the loss of Ltn Peter Bäthge of JG 5 (before in ZG 26) that died in an accident near Gossen, Norway, on 2 April 1945 as far as I know. I would like especially to know the aircraft type (serial will be nice, but is unlikey so late in the war). My source shows a Me 410, the kiet he flew with ZG 26. In this case, I would like to know if there was another crew, his name and fate.

Thanks in advance

Laurent,

The Werner Girbig book on JG5 just lists Peter Bathge fell on 2-4-45 and under him on the same date is Uffz(name unknown) Bordfunker gefallen. The book also credits Bathge with one victory (no details). Another site shows the crash at Molde by Gossen,

Re: Peter Bäthge

Thanks Brian, this source seems to confirm that Bäthge fell aboard a Me 410.

AFAIK Bäthge claimed two victories

18/04/44 Fw. Peter Bäthge 13.(Z) JG 5 Beaufighter 06 Ost S/KH-4 [off Norway] 13.40 - - yes C.2027/I Anerk: Nr.51
03/10/44 Ltn. Peter Bäthge 10. ZG 26 B-24 SJ-11: 40-50m 15.23 - - yes C.2027/II VNE: ASM

The second one was probably a Liberator of 311 (Czech) Sqn.

Re: Peter Bäthge

Laurent,

According to Eric Mombeek in his Eismeerjäger, Band 1, Bäthge transferred to II./JG 5 on 1 April 1945 when 10./ZG 26 was disbanded and was killed in a flying accident the next day in a Bf 109.

Regards,
Tom
