Transfer of two 5./196 Ar196s in September 1942
 

The September 1942 entry in the Flugzeugbestand und Bewegungsmeldungen for Bordfliegerstaffel 5./196 mentions two Ar 196 A-3 being transferred to another unit.
Does anybody have a clue as to the identity of the two aircraft (WNr?) or the destination (I am rather hoping for a ship)? Thanks for any tips and pointers.

This list cant be right. According to KTB Gen.D.Lw.b.Ob.D.M this unit (5/196) had at least 1 losses this month that is not listed in this Bewegungsmeldung.
1.9.42 Ar 196 Wnr 163 Crew Missing.

Some transfer of A/C between units is mentioned this month, but could not find any from 5/196

24.8.42 5/196 had 14 x Ar 196 A3 and 2 x Ar 231
14.9.42 5/196 had 17 x Ar 196 A3 and 2 x Ar 231
24.9.42 Ditto
13.10.42 Ditto (1 loss 13.10.42)

Olve, thank you very much for your detailed answer. It is a pity that there is no record of the transfer, but I am sure you are right. I imagine the KTB is more accurate than the Bewegungsmeldungen. Very interesting tidbit on the Ar 231 as well. I have sent you a PM.

KOMET received a replacement Ar 196 about that time, just before leaving home waters. I will look at the KTB to see if any identification numbers are mentioned.

Any news of Komet's aircraft please ?

Side numbers/letters - aircrew etc ?

Were they used to find the B I Ship "Devon" on the 19th August 1941 ?

When Komet was eventually caught up with were the aircraft with her ?

Could it be the following:
Transfer of 2 Ar 196A-4 to Skaramanga. W.Nr. 121 and 126 landed Skaramanga on 06.09.42 at 11.45. Skaramanga was used by Aufkl.Fl.Gruppe 126. None of these aircraft came from new production and had to come from storage (LZ Gruppe (See), or from another unit.

Ar 196 onboard Komet.

Komet left Gotenhafen 03.07.1940 with one Ar 196. Crew FF Uffz. Fuchs and B Oblt. z. See Lindeman. On that date they made one flight. On the 24.09 the first operationel flight was made. Second flight at 02.10 were it was damaged during start, wounding the pilot slightly. Wings were trown overboard they were damaged beyond repair. The rest of the aircraft was kept onboard. When Komet met Alstertor in 1941, it did not recive a replacement.

The Ar 196 on board "Komet" (HSK 7/Schiff 45) on its first voyage was Ar 196A-1 W.Nr. 0030 SD+BS from 5./196. This aircraft had been partly converted to Ar 196A-2 standard with A-2 wings, floats, armament and radio equipment. It was destroyed on its second flight while attempting to take off in heavy seas on 02.10.40. The crew of Lt.z.See Hans Lindemann and Fw Lührs only received light injuries.

Oops! I let this one slip by me, apologies for not coming back with the answer. My copies of the KTB are not accessible at the moment but I will consult them as soon as I can.
Yes, Komet had an aircraft aboard the night she was sunk. She had just finished a refit, during which the first Arado was found too troublesome and a second was supplied, sometime in September (possibly late August, will confirm. I am certain that all aircraft equipment aboard was new, or at least replacements: my strong impression was that all aircraft gear from her first patrol had been replaced). Komet then sailed from German waters and was attempting to break out into the Atlantic via the Channel to begin her second patrol when she was sunk with all hands on the night of October 13/14 1942. The wreck was found in 2007, the first such find of a German Auxiliary Cruiser.
