typhoons on starkey did they use the special markings ?

Hi All,
Anyone know if the typhoons on operation starkey used the 'scheme as per single engined aircraft ' ?
Also whilst on the subject...
Anyone seen a list of the squadrons that were on the low level ops ?
( i.e that could have carried the markings ?)
Cheers
Jerry

I was looking at such a photo yesterday, so yes, the Typhoons did carry the Operation Starkey markings. I think this was in the first volume of the new 2 TAF series, but it may have been in one (or more) of Chris Thomas's books- the Warpaint, for example.

Hi Graham,
Many thanks for the reply & info.
I must turn out my copy of the old warpaint book,
Is the 'new 2 TAF series', a reprint of the three volumes that was out a few years back ?
Must admitt Chris thomas's books are amongst my favourites, ever since buying the typhoon file all those years ago.
cheers
Jerry

Jerry,

The "new 2TAF" is a new series of four volumes by Chris Shores and Chris Thomas, started a few years back with the final volume only released about 2 months back. It is a major rework with significant new material compared to the "old 2TAF" from about 20 years back. Chris Thomas has in particular put a lot of effort into the C&M aspects and Volume 4 has a bit about Op Starkey markings in addition to what was in Volume 1. Lots of new photos, lots of new profile artwork, lots of new detail. And typically as Chris Thomas has explained elsewhere, literally the day after sending volume 4 to the printers material he had been looking for literally turned up too late for inclusion. But it will get used elsewhere.

Regards,

Hello Boys
Apologies for the delay - just got back from a 7-week jaunt. Thanks for the kind comments and (Col) the free plug! Jerry, despite much searching no photos have turned up of Typhoons in Starkey markings (did Graham mean 'Spartan'? - easy to confuse the two). The shots which turned up after publication of Vol.4 were of the 'sharkmouth' Typhoon and these are published in this month's MAM. Vol 4 has a Mustang in Starkey markings - for which I am indebted to Colin F.

However - I am sure a number of Typhoons squadrons did carry the Starkey markings and they are specifically mentioned in 609's ORB which says the outer third of the upper surfaces of the wing were marked with 'black and white stripes'. presumably the Starkey markings were not applied below the wing (as required) as they would have conflicted with the underwing Typhoon identity stripes.

There's a photo out there somewhere ....

Chris

Excuse my ignorance, but what is MAM Vol 4? A new magazine you can't go without (?), and if so is it useful for someone who not exactly has the camouflage and markings as his top priority?

Cheers

Stig
'MAM' is Model Aircraft Monthly - a UK mag for modellers but with the emphasis on reference material rather than modelling. Cam & mkgs does figure a lot ... but it is usually well researched.

Hi Chris,
many thanks for the reply and info, interesting the stripes may have been only on the upper surfaces of the typhoons.
I agree I am sure there is a photo out there somewhere, It's amazing what photos are turning up on e bay recently, especially captured aircraft, way out of my hobby budget tho', but at least it ensures they aren't thrown away...

Thanks
jerry
