Two Ju88s lost 27/3/41 Med

Hi guys

Re-reading Hajo Herrmann's 'Eagles Wings' - on page 99 he relates that a crew from 7/KG30 was shot down by a fighter, the crew having also shot down their attacker, and that all five airmen (which included the British pilot) were rescued by ASR craft from Sicily. I believe this may have been Oblt Walter Weller and his crew of 4D+GR on 27 March 1941. Can anyone confirm this and also identify the British pilot? Presumably FAA.

On this same date, a Ju88 of 6/LG1 (Uffz August Johannesmann) was shot down by a twin-engine fighter. Any details regarding the latter?

Cheers
Brian

Brian ,

Qm's returns show Weller crew missing by Crete on what looks like the 26th. no note indicating a later correction. The crew of Uffz August Johannesmann are shown as crashing at FL.H.Catania following engine trouble on the 27th.

Brian,

A few more details FF Uffz August Johannesmann, B Uffz Ernst Wedell, Bf Gef. Fritz Warteweg Bs Gef Ambrosius Rziha. The LG1 book says that flying in LI+KP (wn 2317) the crew attacked a tanker and set it on fire and then their 88 was attacked by a twin engined fighter which wounded Johannesmann . The B flew the Ju88 back to Catania on one engine guided on radio by the Ju88 piloted by Hans Biela, however on landing the aircraft crashed and burntout killing the crew,
