Fi156 3(H)/31 shot down 18 May 1940?

Hi guys

Reposted in case anyone missed it!

This does not appear in Peter Cornwell's 'Battle of France Then & Now'
Any ideas?

Cheers

Hi John

My information came via the late Heinrich Weiss.

Peter decided to disregard some of this as being misinformation. I don't know if the Fi156 falls into this category. Hopefully Peter will advise. I wondered if others had information.

Cheers from sweltering Suffolk!

Ahhh, you don't know sweltering! It has been 95-99 F the past few days in NC.

Brian,

You are absolutely correct. I chose to disregard Weiss' account as it did not stand scrutiny against the NVMs nor information from the VDK. But you will find HOLZAPFEL listed in The Battle of France Then & Now on May 21, 1940.

It has been 38 degrees C in the Aude.

Hi Peter

Just to clarify this completely, did your research reveal that the Hurricanes pilots did not encounter Fi156s of 3(H)/31 as suggested in 'Twelve Days in May', or just that Holzapfel was not lost on 18 May?

Cheers
Brian

Re: Fi156 3(H)/31 shot down 18 May 1940?

Brian,

Yes, to both. The claims for Hs126 submitted by HARRIS, RATFORD, & BELL-SALTER of No.253 Squadron near Cambrai on May 18, 1940, are well documented but I believe relate to a 3.(H)/41 aircraft as detailed in The Battle of France Then & Now & not connected to the loss of the Fi156 of 3.(H)/21 flown by HOLZAPFEL three days later for reasons already stated. Incidentally, the details of this engagement as published on pp212/3 & p232 of Twelve Days in May are contradictory.
