Albemarle V1641 TT - 04 March 1944
I am trying to find out information concerning the loss of Albemarle V1641 TT which took off from RAF Hurn at 2112hrs on the 3rd March 1944 on a supply drop operation for the SOE over France.
I have managed to find out that it was shot down near Chateaudun that night/early morning of the 4th and the crew are buried in Orleans. I'm just curious if there are any other resources that can add a few more details to the aircraft and mission. One of the crew was part of my wife's family, hence my interest. Unfortunately the Air Historical Branch are unable to release any info as there is no blood ties to my wife (her Grand-Aunt was married to the crewman). There are no direct family alive now. Any pointers would be appreciated. Mark |
Re: Albemarle V1641 TT - 04 March 1944
Hi Mark,
Though Without Anger by Colin Cummings has this as: 03/03/44 V1641 Albemarle No.570 Sqn F/O C J Elmer F/O J H Hood F/O T J Adamson Sgt E J Atkinson Sgt J Davies The aircraft was one of a mixed tasking of Albemarles and Stirlings engaged in SOE work but it failed to return. I would visit The National Archives at Kew to view the No.570 Sqn Operational Record Book. This is the war diary for the unit and should give some more on the tasking of the aircraft as well as details of previous operational flights by the airman you are interested in. Also at Kew are the surviving SOE files so these might also give more on the drop zones and groups. Regards Ross |

Thanks. I'll look up the Colin Cummings book and re-visit Kew. I managed to obtain some details about the other missions, but didnt think to ask for SOE records while there. Again thanks Mark |
