547 Sqn Liberator Loss 16/11/44

Trying to find out about the loss of Sgt. Miles Cottingham an air gunner with 547 Sqn. He was buried in Redcar Cemetry. Any Info would be a great help as I'm getting the info for his former sweet heart.

Many Thanks and have a great weekend.

Your Sincerely,

Andrew

Re: 547 Sqn Liberator Loss 16/11/44

Hi Andy
At the time of his death 547 were based at Leuchars in Fife(Jefford-RAF Squadrons). The fact that there was a body to be taken home for burial suggests that he came to grief in a crash on or close to land or in an accident or through illness. His death is not registered in England or Wales so if you can get sight of the Scottish death register for the time it may give a clue as to where he died.It might also be mentioned in the ORB for the Sqn or Leuchars.
Hope this helps a little
Regards
Dick

Lib EW305 maybe a possibility, though the other names associated with 547 losses on this date are all on Runnymede....Cottingham may have washed up on shore. He was originally listed as Missing in Flight magazine.

EW305 believed shot down off Bornholm Island. If part of this crew his body may have been picked up from the sea by a (an allied) vessel and brought to a UK harbour.

Scotlands People has one Miles Cottingham listed in 1944.. Though where exactly his death is registered I can't tell you. However you can go to the http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk website and pay to view his death cert online

Dear all,

May I say thank you to you all. The artical was published in our in-house publication for Partners in last Fridays Waitrose Chronicle.

I thought it would be nice to find out what happened to Miles so the Partnership could tell his former sweet heart.

Once again thank you.

Your Sincerely

Andrew
