Q:. Luftwaffe Unit Insignias

Were the Luftwaffe unit insignias on both sides of the aircraft, such as this one?

Re: Q:. Luftwaffe Unit Insignias

Hi, Andrew...

Generally, in my experience, yes, although I have seen examples in researching colour schemes for my model aircraft where a marking appears only on one side, so I'm pretty sure there will be other instances of this having happened.

Be aware, however, that even when the answer is a definite 'yes', the markings may not necessarily be the same one ! Point in case: Junkers Ju88A-1 coded L1+AR of 7.Staffel/Lehrgeschwader 1 during the Battle of Britain, which displayed LG1's emblem on the left side of the nose, and III.Gruppe's emblem on the right, 7.Staffel falling within III.Gruppe. And again, where you have a definite 'yes', it's prudent to try and ascertain which way the emblem is facing, as the motif in any given emblem didn't always face 'forward'.

Regards...

Paul
