Luftwaffe in Rumania, 1944

The latest update to www.ghostbombers.com consists of three pages of material about the disposition of Luftwaffe and Rumanian units in July/August 1944 plus a page of assorted ULTRAs about Rumania, Luftflotte 4 and Fliegerkorps I.

Hi Nick!

If I got it right, 15.(kroat.)/JG 52 was on July 1, 1944 on Palas airfield without planes? Where is that airfiled? I know that one part of Croatian pilots were on Zilistea about that time.

With best regards,
Marko

ohne Flugzeuge = without aircraft, as you thought. I have no idea where Palas is! The intelligence report I used was in the form of a list, the actual map overlay was not reproduced unfortunately.

Hi!

www.expedia.com/maps Search* does find one Palas near the coast of Black Sea just west of Constanta. I try to put direct link of the resulting map below, let's see if it works out:

Seems to work, but the location name "Palas" disappears from the linked picture though appears in the search results window on my screen!

HTH,
Kari

Yes, I can confirm that Palas was Constanta harbour's airfield, (located in Rumania).

The question arises: what were the Croats doing in Rumania? Waiting for their fighter planes? And why in Rumania?
How long did they stay over there and when did they leave (with or withour airplanes)?

In short, new group of Croatian pilots waited for the pilots that retrited from Crimea and planes that never arrived. They left for Koenigsberg. It will be described in my book on 15.(kroat.)/JG 52.
