Was Unteroffizier Karl Huber lost over England - 29.08.40?
 

Hi,

Could anyone provide information of the loss of Unteroffizier Karl Huber who was killed on the 29th July 1940. I am not sure he was a flier but he had already won the iron cross 1st and 2nd class so I guess he had seen plenty of action. Was he part of the stuka squadron who flew over Dover that day?

Date of death was July 29, 1940. Good to see that you are now checking details before the auction ends:

3./NJG1 Messerschmitt Bf110C. Hit by return fire from RAF bomber engaged during night sortie and crashed at Ennigerloh. FF Fw Werner Hahn and BF Uffz Karl Huber both killed. Aircraft a 100% write-off.

Hallo Peter

This loss is not listed in any of the two standard reference books on the Battle of Britain, that is neither in Mason's book nor the Then and Now publication (at least not in my issue). How come? To me the action and loss is very much part of the Battle even though the action itself did not occur on direct confrontation over Britain. Are authors staring themselves blind on the day and night offensive from the German side and forget what Bomber (and Coastal) Command did during the period?

The loss itself is listed in Balss first book, so is not new as such, but I feel it should have been incorporated in these books.

Hello Stig,

The loss is included in BoBT&N listed on p550 as being lost on the night of July 28/29, 1940. I cannot answer for Frank Mason's work.

Must have back tracked in Mason only and not in BoB T&N.....:o
