Aircraft crew ID Help

Hi all,

I was directed here by another member because I was looking for specific information on a 1/48 scale Do-217 E-4 I am building. The markings of the model will be from 5./KG 2 U5+ZN. Aircraft was based in Gilze Rijen in 1942.

Since I make nameplates for the model I build with the pilot/crew, I was curious if anyone knew who flew the aircraft.

Thanks so much in advance!!

Do you have any proof that a Do 217E with the unit code U5 + ZN existed in 5./KG 2, photos etc? Kit manufacturers are notoriously cavalier when it comes to decals..

A better idea may be to build the model of a known aircraft of KG 2. There is a picture of the first Do 217 to fall into the hands of British Intelligence, an E-3 from KG 2 that crash landed on Romney Marsh, Kent in October 1942 after a sea reconaissance sortie. Unfortunately the picture I have is rather small...does anyone have the unit code of this aircraft... U5 + ?? or a larger scan of this photo?

Hi P,

I think Do-217's operated in Gilze Rijen because Airfix has a Do-217E-4 from 8/KG. 2 that was based there in 1942. Hmm? Will keep looking.

No 5./KG 2 but another 217 lost after taking off from Gilze Rijen..
