Location of 10.(Pz.)/SG1 on 24Jul44
I'm looking for the location that 10.(Pz)/SG1 was serving at and operating against on the 24Jul44. Also was Hermann Neumann actually shot down on that date and what Ju-87?

Re: Location of 10.(Pz.)/SG1 on 24Jul44
Michael,
check out this: http://www.ww2.dk/air/attack/sg1.htm The Staffel was presumably based in "Dubowo". I think this is near Suwalki, which is near todays "country-triangle Poland -- Lithiuania -- Byelorussia". Concerning losses: http://www.ww2.dk/oob/bestand/schlacht/b10sg1.html Acc. to this source, the Staffel only reported 3xJu87D-5 due to enemy impact lost in July. But personally I think these statistics are not very accurate. Concerning the date: Why do you ask, is there a doubt? |
Re: Location of 10.(Pz.)/SG1 on 24Jul44
It was the second time that Neumann was shot down but since it was listed in an interview dates don't always match. He was shot down the first time by flak and the second time by a fighter.

Re: Location of 10.(Pz.)/SG1 on 24Jul44
According to Volume 2 of our recent book: ”Dive-Bomber and Ground-Attack Units of the Luftwaffe” (to be released in March 2010) the 10.(Pz)SG 1at about this time was located:
4 July 1944: moved to Dubna/65 km north-east of Bialystok. 10 July: to Kowno (Kaunas)/Lithuania 15 July: to Dubowo/13 km south-west of Suwalki in north-east Poland. August: to Hüttenfelde/East Prussia (4. Fliegerdivision). For those who care, Volume 1 is apparently available in Europe but not quite yet in North America. HLdZ DGS |

Thanks Doug. Do you know if the day he was shot down is correct. Going to place my order but Amazon just gives Jan 2010 for release.

Re: Location of 10.(Pz.)/SG1 on 24Jul44
After a check of our notes, I see that we have nothing about this specific incident. We are concerned primarily with unit histories and resort to shoot downs and losses to fill in thin spots where more general information about a unit is lacking.
Regarding Amazon, they made a number of errors in our listings and we are trying to correct them. Regarding the release of Volume 2, Ian Allan's date of March 2010 still stands. It should be in the printing stage as we speak, so all appears to be "on track". Whether or not there will be future volumes depends on several things that I won't elaborate here, but the research continues. The situation is "fluid". DGS |
