Luftwaffe Losses over ENgland - 12.05.40?
 

Hi,

Bought this photo of supposed Leftwaffe man lost over England on 12.05.1940.

Are there any records of aircraft and aircrew lost on this date over England?

According to the book The Blitz Then & Now by Winston Ramsey (ISBN: 0900913452) there are no records of any raids on England on that date, or the day on either side of this date. As the French/Western Campaign had started just 2 days before I would surmise that the Luftwaffe would of been concentrating all their available airborne assets on that offensive. According to The Battle Of France Then & Now by Peter D Cornwell (ISBN: 1-870067-65-7) the Luftwaffe had approx 80 aircraft either shot down or damaged on the 12th May 1940 on the Western Front.

If you had a name, you would have a chance but as has been said, nothing over UK that day so must be NW Europe mainland so you have one hell of a lot of aircraft to sort through

Double chevrons=Ogefr or Sanitaetsogefr so not unusual at all

Could have been part of the following crew:

Could have been the following person, and that the message to the mother simply said that he was killed fighting the British, and that she assumed this happened over England?

I agree that it is a case of the mother being told that he died fighting against the British (English) / Western Allies and she has taken it to mean fighting over England. All the losses shown in the links in the previous post don't actually say where the aircraft were shot down (except for the last one) and in The Battle Of France Then & Now there are losses from all those units over the Western Front.
I have wehrpasses to Luftwaffe personnel that have campaign entries stating that they were involved in the fight against England and yet never left the airfield as they were in signals or mechanics etc.
