Well, it certainly was "primative" compared to the ETO! Recall, the island was little more than volcanic ash and had been blasted by USN and USAAF for 20 days prior to invasion, then during the 60-day campaign. I doubt there was little left of any original eco-systems.

On the positive side, its conquest and development enabled the use of long-range P-51 and P-47N escorts for the B-29s and over 1500 emergency landings from various mechanical and battle damage until the end of the war.
