Lancaster DV-218 12 Squadron

Hello,

Lancaster DV-218 12 Squadron crashed on November 3 1943 at
Kempen-Germany.
My quistion:
is it Kempen betweem Venlo and Krefeld Germany?
Or Kempen (a small Hamlet) near Karken Germany ?

Chorley, says 5 crewmembers were KIA and buried on
Städtfriedhof at Mönchengladbach.

Michel, I don't know the answer, but geography might help. The target was Dusseldorf and the crew were buried at Monchengladbach, so which Kempen is closer? I don't think the crew would have been buried far from the crash site, so a Kempen near there or on a possible route from Dusseldorf towards the English Channel...

No doubt someone will have a better answer. I think Venlo was a nightfighter base, so a likely area for aircraft to be shot down (but a good reason to keep away!)
If it was approaching the target, perhaps the Krefeld one, if after bombing, then the Karken one looks a more likely route home. Which is the nearer to Monchengladbach?

Kempen is 4 km west of Krefeld. Go Wikipedia

Thanks, Jeorg, I'm sure that with your help of that standard, things are sooooo much clearer!!! - not!!!

If you had read Michel's post properly, he was asking which of the Kempen locations it might be.

In what way does stating (from Wiki - wow!) that one Kempen is 4 km from Krefeld help him?

Icare9, I understand what Joerg is saying. Simply speaking, the Kempen in question is 4km west of Krefeld which is the one michel might have referred to as between Venlo and Krefeld, which is though quite a distance from Venlo and almost on the doorstep of Krefeld. Danny

I just checked on a map and both Kempens would have had dead aviators burried in Moenchengladbach. That of course makes it a bit harder. Best is to contact the local city/town halls and ask to talk to their archive. Danny
