Marker Dye - RAF Pilots 1940
According to the AHB published assessment document on the Battle of Britain it is stated that in the Fighter Command Operations Record Book for 18 August 1940, Appendix D5, that RAF pilots were being issued with fluorescine marker dye packs at the end of August. Although I have not pulled out the document at Kew to look at exactly what the ORB says, is there any evidence that RAF pilots were so equipped during the Battle of Britain? I do not believe they were, but would like to be sure.
Other references indicate that later issue 1932 pattern Mae Wests were fitted with a dye pouch, Stores Ref 33C/629, but that this was not until December 1940. Does anyone know of any evidence of earlier usage, especially during the Battle of Britain? I suspect that the FC ORB was getting a bit ahead of reality. |
