7 Dec. 1944 loss
Recently I aquired some documents for a Fallschirmjager who served with the Stab/3. Fallschirmjager Div.. In with the documents is a letter from the divisional commander stating that on 7 December 1944 while 3. Fallschirmjager Div. was moving with the 1 SS Panzerkorps, presumably in prepartation for the Battle of the Bulge, the soldier in question shot down with small arms fire (MG) one of two Jagdbombern i.e. fighter bombers which attacked the units.
The action took place when the units were between the areas of Schmidheim and Blankenheim. According to the report one of the fighter bombers was shot down. Are there any loss listings for RAF or USAAF a/c who went down in this area? Perhaps a bit of a needle in a hay stack but perhaps not. Regards Jeremy |
Re: 7 Dec. 1944 loss
Guten Abend Spanferkel !
There were no Jabo or fighter activities that day by U.S. AAF in the area due to bad weather. 9th AF had just 10 fighters in the air and none was lost. 8th AF had none . 2nd TAF has one loss in the Dordrecht/Netherlands area. Your needle in the haystack may probably be in error in the date. When the event would have had happened on December 17th, you would find a hell of air-battles in the area and a considerable number of U.S. losses between Blankenheim and Schmidheim. Best regards ! Re: 7 Dec. 1944 loss
Thanks Horst,
Your comment about the date being a mistake may very well be the case and as you point out on the 17th of Dec. and beyond the air activity was more intense. The document I am referencing is quite clear as to the date and typed as well although since it is from the Divisional commander vs. a witness to the action I could see a discrepancy in date being possible. I'll search more to make sure no other info. exists. Thanks again. Jeremy |
