Panzer IV F-2 with 75mm KwK (Cannon)
|
Panzerkampfwagen IV Ausf F2 w/75mm KwK 40 L/43
I'm thinking this tank belonged to either 10th Panzer or 21st Panzer. (Both divisions were liquidated in Tunisia.)
21st Panzer: Rommel didn't have many Ausf F2/G's (maybe 30 of them were operational in the whole Africa Korps at any given time) and he tended to put his best assets up in the spearhead which was 21st Panzer. (I don't think 15th Panzer had any long barrel Mk IV's at all.) 10th Panzer: The division arrived with brand spanking new Ausf F2/G's. Bronc |
Re: help in identifying this tank and unit
Hallo,
I believe that is an early Ausf G. It has the rounded muzzle brake of the shorter L/43 version of the 75mm gun. The loader's vision port beside the gun appears to be missing, as do the vision ports on the turret side (although those spare tracks make it difficult to be sure !). Regards, Martin. |
I agree Martin...
Many believe the F2 variant didn't even exist--that they were all early G models.
Interesting photo though. Bronc |
