Typhoon wheel?
 

Can anybody help in identifying this wheel? It resembles a Typhoon wheel, however when comparing with a period picture at the bottom, there are some subtle differences..

Allegedly, the wheel came from a Typhoon which crashed in the vicinity of Barneveld (Netherlands), possibly the crash of 183 squadron PD516 (HF-?), flown by F/O Hollingworth. I am trying to ascertain if that could be the case

I have identified some ( barely readable) numbers on the rim and if usefull can post them here as well

There should be numbers prefixed with the letters AH.

What are they?

FrederikP, your 1st photo shows 4 spoke wheel while the Typhoon photo shows a 5 spoke wheel.

Looks like a Tempest wheel to me. Will post a photo tomorrow.

I'm no expert on aircraft wheels but the mystery wheel does seem to resemble those fitted to all marks of Tempest (bar most of the JN serial batch which had Typhoon-style 5-spoke wheels). The attached photo shows the wheels of a late production Tempest V in Germany, late 1945.

many thanks for this! Great picture, too. This definitely sheds a different light on our "mystery wheel" -as the nearest Tempest crash was miles away (Feb 8, 1945; F/Lt Jones crashlanded in Hoenderloo, if i recall properly) from the farm where this wheel was found :confused:

Could it be that by late 1944, some of the Typhoons were fitted with Tempest wheels? I am by no means an expert, but perhaps someone on this forum knows..

Also hoping that the numbers on the wheel can provide somewhat of a clue !

I rather thought you might ask that question, so I have looked through a large number of late production Typhoon photos ... but none have Tempest-style wheels.

I'm afraid the numbers you quote mean nothing to me.

The AH number was not on my list and thus I have asked the question for you on another forum where there are more "teccy" types.

The answer is that this is Airspeed Oxford or Consul. Certainly not Typhoon, Tempest or Spitfire.
