Scharnhorst's Ar196 attacked U-boat
Hi guys
On 21 June 1940, U-boat U-99 was attacked in error by one of Scharnhorst's Ar 196s, and badly damaged. Has anyone further information? Cheers Brian |

Brian I have sent an E-Mail with attachment from 'U-Boot Operartions of the Second World War' by Kenneth Wynn. This only indicates light damage. hope this helps,

Re: Scharnhorst's Ar196 attacked U-boat
The BdU KTB entry for the day reads:
"U-99 was so badly damaged by a/c bombs that she had to return to Wilhelmshaven. It is possible that the boat was attacked by an a/c from Scharnhorst. The matter cannot be cleared up until U-99 and Scharnhorst have beth entered port." U-99 entered port on 24 June and it was estimated that it would take 2 and a half days to repair her. Whatever damage she sustained in the attack can't have been too bad as the boat re-sailed for a patrol in the Atlantic on 27 June. Hope this helps. |
