14/05/1940 P/O P.L.Jarvis 87 Squadron
Hi !
P/O. Paul Leonard Jarvis was flying Hurricane L1616 when he went missing west of Maastricht. Is it possible that he was shot down by ZG1, flying Bf110's ? Many thanks and best regards, Luc |

14/05/1940 P/O P.L.Jarvis 87 Squadron - claimed by ZG1 ?
Hi Bruce,
Many thanks for your info. Checked the books in question and compared it with a victory list of Jim Perry (Tony Wood - Les Butler website). Only for the victories of ZG1 I haven't been able to find a possible victim. Was this unit protecting the bombers in question ? Best regards Luc |
Re: 14/05/1940 P/O P.L.Jarvis 87 Squadron
Hi uc,
My interpretation of events on May 14 is as follows: P/O Jarvis (L1616) and P/O Saunders (L1612) of No. 87 Sqn shot down west of Maastricht and Liege ~09.30 by (probably) return fire from He1111's of I. or III./KG27. (Although these were escorted by I./JG27 there are no claims from this unit at this time and location.) SL Parnall (L1639), F/O Royce (L1950), P/O White (L1916) and Sgt Hamblett (N2492) of No. 504 Sqn shot down ~17.45 around Ath by III./JG26 (which unit was escorting III./LG1 on a bombing raid to Mons). P/O Mackworth (L1834) and F/O Joyce (L1646) of No. 87 Sqn shot down ~19.00 around Bruxelles by I./ZG1 (which unit was escorting II./KG1 on a bomb raid to northern France). I hardly dare to say it, but please note that my interpretation of events differs from Peter Cornwell's TBOFTAN. Of course open to any comments or corrections. Regards, Pieter |
