Ju88 shot down over Scotland 12/6/41
Hi guys
Reading a new book 'Luftwaffe over Scotland', the author Les Taylor suggests that a Ju88 of I/KG30 (Fullner crew) was shot down by a 500 Squadron Blenheim on 12 June 1941. This may be correct, or could this have been the Ju88 claimed by FAA pilot Sub-Lt(A) Davies flying a Sea Hurricane, that the late Ray Sturtivant had recorded on 19 June 1941 (a possible typo?) We discussed this earlier, at my behest. Cheers Brian |
Re: Ju88 shot down over Scotland 12/6/41
I have a claim for a Bf 109 damaged by 500 Sqn on 12 Jun 41 and a Ju 88 damaged by 500 Sqn on 18 Jun but both nowhere near Scotland. The combats on both dates resulted in the Blenheim being damaged hence I believe this could be a typo in John Foreman's book. OGefr Ernst Feulner and his crew from 5/KG 30 were lost on 12 Jun but whether day light or night is not known

Hi Chris
So that seems to eliminate 500 Squadron from the equation! Is anyone in contact with Les Taylor? He lives near Fraserburgh. By the way, Chris, did you receive the book OK? Cheers Brian |
Re: Ju88 shot down over Scotland 12/6/41
Brian,
RAF claims are unexplored territories for me, but I gathered that 500 Squadron was stationed up north in April-August 1942 only (and then with Hudsons?). Of course a Blenheim could have flown distances in 1941, but a claim in the Norfolk area would seem more likely then. Regards, Leendert |
Re: Ju88 shot down over Scotland 12/6/41
Of interest, my notes say 12 Jun-2015 hrs, Blenheim T/500 Sqn 3 Bf 109s Norfolk; ac slightly damaged. 18 Jun-1905 Blenheim A/500 Sqn Ju 88 damaged off Norfolk coast; ac slightly damaged. I will admit I have found a number of similar errors attributing German ac to RAF claims in various sources whilst writing my forthcoming book, the problem being the Germans stating if an ac was shot down during the night of 12-13 Jun that if they knew it was lost in the early hours of 13 Jun, that is what was recorded. On of the joys of being a writer.
Brian: Sorry but yes-book and work have got in the way. No chance to read it there are a number of other books before that for me to read) but I will. Thanks |
Re: Ju88 shot down over Scotland 12/6/41
Hi guys
Does anyone know where the 5/KG30 Ju88 crashed on 12 June 1941? Apparently it had attacked HMS Ethopian in Loch Ewe. Who were crew? What was its markings? Was it the aircraft claimed by a Sea Hurricane of 880 Squadron from Arbroath? Cheers Brian |
